Looking at the benefits of goat rearing, the Prime Minister of the country Narendra Modi mentioned goat rearing in the 110th episode of Mann Ki Baat. He said in Mann Ki Baat that when we talk about animal husbandry, we often stop at cow and buffalo, but goat is also an important livestock, which is not discussed much.
In the Mann Ki Baat program, Prime Minister Modi talked about people involved in goat rearing in different areas of the country. He also shared information about goat rearing being done in Kalahandi, Odisha. He told how goat rearing is being done in the village with the help of Goat Bank, which has provided employment to the people.
Jayanti Mahapatra and her husband Biren Sahu used to work in Bangalore but they decided to leave that and come to Salebhata village in Kalahandi. They are promoting goat rearing at the community level. There are about a dozen goats in their goat farm , through which a complete system has been created for the farmers. Through this, farmers are given 2 goats for 24 months. In 2 years, goats give birth to 9 to 10 kids. Out of these, the bank keeps 6 kids and the rest are given to the same family that does goat rearing. Not only this, necessary services are also provided for the care of goats. Today more than 1000 farmers from 50 villages are associated with this couple. With their help, the villagers are moving towards self-reliance in the field of animal husbandry. I feel very happy to see that successful professionals in various fields are adopting new methods to make small farmers empowered and self-reliant. Their efforts are inspiring to everyone.
